i spent most of my late teens playing TF2 and whacking it to hentai. use this time where you have no bills/rent to pay or actual responsibilities to find what you're good at and work on it. count your blessings: you have a roof over your head and parents that (presumably) tolerate you at a bare minimum. ignore all the trust fund kids your age that are trillionaires either because of daddy's money or just plain dumb luck. the next 10 years or so will be filled with opportunities to fuck up and learn from.

your twenties are made for fuckups and discovering what you're good at and what you're dogshit at through raw trial and error. you probably have this idea in your head that if you haven't done anything meaningful by the time you're 30 (or maybe even 25) that your life is a failure and you should just suck off a shotgun. you have a good 70-80 years in front of you. maybe you already have something resembling a skill that you can make money off of independently and go from there. maybe you want to learn a trade and make some good money doing dirty work. maybe you want to be a deadbeat and play Halo every night in your mom's basement.

maybe you want to fall for the college meme and start off your adult life with some of that spicy crippling debt you've heard so much about. you finish up high school and go from there. it just means you can buy cigarettes and legally have sex (the former i couldn't even do if i wanted to since they raised it to 21 later that year, the bastards). the world doesn't become a completely different place the day you become legal age. as i was sitting there contemplating all this, you sort of realize that this is it. i had been, for all intents and purposes, fired from my job at another shitty burger place where my one and only job was to sweep floors for seven hours straight.

it was rainy and miserable outside, i paid for it myself, my mom and dad (whom i lived with) thought i was an autist for making such a big deal out of it being my birthday lunch (which i was). You know what I did on my 18th birthday? i had a dave's double meal and a frosty at a ghetto wendy's. in reality you only have two choices: drag yourself through it or become an hero. Listen kid, you're five years below me and i can already tell you that life does not get better.
